I assumed Avast would alert me on discovering trojans etc but I only found out I had 4 of the blighters after doing a scan! Can anyone tell me why the programme didn't alert me sooner? is there a better free anti virus that would have done so? I used to have Avg but had issues with that too not picking up viruses

I havent used AVAST myself but; I assume that you have kept up to date on virus definitions, and that real time protection is switched on? Is this a legit version? If not it could be that files are missing and this has caused the real time protection to fail, either all together or in some areas. the best thing is to scan all new files you download or transfer on to your PC and to run a scan eveyday aswell.
The best thing to do is have a look at this thread and have a look at the different firewalls and antiivirus and decide for yourself which is best. Theres always has and always will be arguments over which is the best.

Avast auto updates daily, as for being legit, it's a free programme. I don't think I should have to manually scan every day,I've started doing online virus scans with Kaspersky as it seems to work well, I might try others and see which is the best

actually I don't think you can set it to scan daily, I've checked the configurations and it will only update daily unless you purchase the professional version, methinks I should consider other options, thanks for your help
